Liberalized Exchange Rate Management System (LERMS) was put in place (of Pegged Exchange Rate System) in March 1992. Under LERMS, initially a dual exchange rate system was followed. They were free to retain the balance of 60% of foreign exchange for selling in the free market for permissible transactions.
