HIV affects about 35 million people worldwide and has been a top public health concern since the 1980s.
Though still incurable, HIV can be suppressed with drugs. Worldwide, some 13 million received treatment between 2010 and 2013.
HIV may have entered the human population in the first half of the century in equatorial Africa, possibly through the consumption of chimpanzees infected with the simian immunodeficiency virus.
Researchers conjecture that it spread from Africa, still the hardest-hit continent, to Haiti.
