John Rogan was born in Hendersonville, Tennessee, on February 16, 1868. He was the son of the former slave William Rogan, as the fourth of twelve children. John F. Carroll (1932–1969) is one of 20 known people in medical history to have reached a height of 8 feet (240 cm) or more. He suffered from severe, 2-dimensional spinal curvature (Kyphoscoliosis) and acromegalic gigantism. He had a standing height of 8 ft 1⁄4 in (244 cm) on October 14, 1959, at age 27 but his height would have been 8 ft 7 3⁄4 in (264 cm), assuming normal curvature of the spine. He was later measured at 7 ft 10 1⁄2 in (240 cm) in 1968, having shrunk in stature due to his worsening spinal condition. He is the Third  Tallest Person In The World.

Carroll was born in Buffalo, New York, and also known as the Buffalo Giant in the medical literature. He was third in stature only to Robert Wadlow and John Rogan. Stadnyk's excessive growth began after brain surgery at the age of 13, after which he developed a pituitary gland tumor that caused the gland to secrete large amounts of growth hormone. This resulted in what doctors describe as acromegalic gigantism. Twenty years after the surgery, the doctors discovered the tumor had mysteriously disappeared and he was currently healthy. He reportedly wore US size 24.5 shoes. Although he held the title for a month, Stadnyk, having no interest in being in any record book, refused to be measured, ending his GWR recognition. Others have questioned the legitimacy of his record, noting that Stadnyk had never been officially measured by Guinness World Records, only by the "Ukrainian Book of Records" that says that he measures 2.44 meters (8 ft 1⁄8 in).
